Common Genders Thursday 7th August

£15.00

Common Genders is a Sheffield-based non-fiction socialist feminist reading group, hosted at Juno Books and online. This reading group is a chance for people in Sheffield to come together in an inclusive, non-partisan environment to discuss readings on various socialist feminist themes and topics.

The next session will be on at Juno Books. For this month's session, we will be reading Against Landlords: How to Solve the Housing Crisis by Nick Bano, published by Verso Books (2024) (https://www.versobooks.com/en-gb/products/2956-against-landlords)

The controversial case for why building more housing will not solve the housing problem. Against Landlords overturns the stale assumptions and YIMBY delusions as to why housing in the UK is so poor, and why rent is so high. Bano lays the blame squarely at the feet of landlordism, which boosts house prices and makes tenancy unaffordable. Furthermore, building more housing is not the solution. It is firstly a problem of the law, and legal reforms must sweep away the rot at the heart of the housing crisis and British political life.

Supplementary resources include:
- The Verso Podcast: A Land Without Landlords: Nick Bano & Beth Stratford (https://www.versobooks.com/en-gb/blogs/news/a-land-without-landlords-nick-bano-beth-stratford)

Common Genders is hosted by Sylvia, an editor at Ebb Magazine. If you have any queries or concerns, please contact sylvia@commongenders.org and also check out our social media.
